When children dare to leave their comfort zone and try new activities, their confidence can really soar. So, we make sure we include exciting and challenging activities in all our school residential trips.
We want them to learn new skills, rise to new challenges and discover what they can really achieve in the freedom of the outdoors - all whilst having a great time together! We want children to leave a Rootd Residential trip feeling more confident, resilient and proud of what they've accomplished in their time away from home.
Abseiling
Abseiling increases confidence and resilience through a challenging height-based activity. Experience a real sense of acheivement as you successfully lower yourself down the abseiling wall with guidance and encouragement from our instructors.
Archery
Feel like Robin Hood as you go for gold amongst the trees. Requiring precision, control, and a steady hand, archery is challenging and rewarding. Cheering on teammates is a must for this activity, and many children discover a talent for this new skill.
BUGGY BUILD
Work as the ultimate team by learning and combining rope skills and tying knots with communication, problem-solving, and decision-making, to build a robust and working buggy from scratch before putting the buggy to the test and winning the race! Laughter guaranteed!
bushcraft
Survive together in nature! Work together to build a woodland shelter. Learn how to safely use a fire steel and build the perfect campfire to roast marshmallows! Bushcraft improves teamwork and cooperation whilst development a better understanding of our natural resources.
CAMPFIRE
No trip would be complete without an evening around the campfire! Get together with your group to share stories and sing songs, while unwinding from an active day and coming together for some light-hearted fun and hot chocolat before bedtime.
CLIMBING
Develop your confidence and trust as you work out the best route up this outdoor climbing wall with a real crag feel. This session offers you a chance to challenge yourself on an individual level as well as be supportive and part of a wider team.
CRATESTACKING
Who can build and climb the highest tower? Communication and problem-solving skills are stacked together in this fun and challenging activity, pushing you to your personal limits whilst encouraging communication, teamwork, and most importantly having fun!
EVENING ACTIVITIES
The adventure doesn’t stop when the sun goes down! Our fun evening activity programme includes Cresta Run toboggans, team games and even the chance to put your detective hats on to solve a mystery in our Cluedo Challenge.
FOREST GAMES
Play and exploration is at the heart of every Rootd adventure. In between the adrenaline filled activities, take part in woodland games inspired by the natural world. Unplug, switch on, and have fun!
HIGH ROPES
Feel the adrenaline as you reach new heights whilst conquering the vertical obstacle course, tackling ladders, traverses, and balance beams. Push yourself whilst practising dexterity and control to feel a real sense of achievement.
NATURE ENGAGEMENT
Explore the woodland through games and activities and discover all the fascinating life within it. This fun and interactive session looks at the smallest to the largest of our living things with topics including; Terrific Trees, Animal Antics, and Interesting Invertebrates.
NIGHTLINE
Fancy being an Arctic explorer? How about in a Blizzard! Put your trust in your partner to guide you around the obstacle course… whilst blindfolded! Fantastic for developing communication and concentration.
TEAM CHALLENGE
Our teambuilding challenges and games encourage collaborative working, improving communication and social skills. And rather than encouraging competitiveness, we encourage children to support each other to reach shared goals.
UNDERGROUND TUNNELS
Built to replicate a real caving network, with varying widths of tunnels, squeezes, a corkscrew and chambers. Face your fears while experiencing the thrill of potholing in a safe environment and exploring like never before. This is an activity you won't forget!

An education in nature
Spending time in the outdoors has so many benefits for children. From improving physical and mental health to increasing creativity and building problem-solving skills, the positive impact of being in nature can be huge.
At Rootd, our back-to-basics Bushcraft and Explorer activities focus on connecting children with nature and opening their eyes to the potential for adventure in the great outdoors.
Explorers
A whistle stop tour of British nature and wildlife:
- Trees – An introduction to the largest of our living things. Children learn the basics of identification, life cycles and their connection to human history.
- Insects – Children collect and identify insects, getting close up and personal to combat their fears!
- Mammals – A chance for children to ask questions, share stories and take part in woodland games to develop a better understanding of animal behaviour.
- Foraging – Year 5-7 pupils learn about the practical applications, including food and medicine, of our common species, finishing up by safely collecting and eating the common nettle.
Survivor bushcraft
- Explore the essentials of survival - shelter, fire and food.
- Teach children how to use the woodlands in a respectful way.
- Finish by toasting marshmallows on fires the children have built themselves!
